In what has become synonymous with thousands of jobless graduates, yet another young man on Monday braved the morning rain to advertise his skills to prospective employers.
Elijah Yegon, 29, says opted to try his luck after seeing two jobless graduates get job offers after standing beside the highways with a placard.
The Economics and Statistics graduate has been a victim of two companies that had to restructure and retrench in a bid to cut costs but he still had hope in the sector plunging his lifetime savings into acquiring a Master’s degree.
His struggles started back in high school where he dropped out and after resuming did not manage to pass well. After repeating Form Four in 2005, Mr Yegon scored a B+ and was admitted to the university where he graduated with a Bachelors in Economics and Statistics in 2012.
“While in school I was also pursuing CPA section 1 and 2 and so on graduating I thought I had enough background in my area,” Mr Yegon told Nairobi News.
His first job was a sales representative at a local bank from April 2013 to October 2013 when the company announced its plans to downsize.
“Since I had applied for other jobs, I got a job offer at Kenafric in the same position but in September 2015 they also announced their plans to cut down,” said Mr Yegon.
He then used his Sh200,000 savings to pay for a Master of Arts in Project Planning and Management at the University of Nairobi.
“I thought because there were very many projects starting up I wouldn’t miss a project manager’s job,” said Mr Yegon.
He has been forced to defer four units after running out of savings and not getting a job while still pursuing his education.
Mr Yegon is currently being housed by his village mate in Eastleigh estate and wakes up daily to drop his curriculum vitae.
“Sometimes I do blind applications but other times I apply for advertised vacancies and have done approximately 500 applications both online and physical this year,” he said.
He has not received any internship or job offers and sometimes doubts if the documents will reach the employers as security officers often ask him to leave them at the gate for lack of appointment.
